A recent call-out in Bristol reminded us that our wild neighbours often seek out the most unexpected places when they are in need of help.
The Discovery
Last week, a local couple in Hanham, Bristol, contacted the us and Secret World Wildlife Rescue about a persistent visitor. A badger had dug its way under the foundations of their garage and fencing. The animal had remained there all day, partially exposed and clearly reluctant to move. Sensing something was wrong, the residents wisely called for expert assistance.
The Rescue
Upon arrival, we were prepared for a complex situation, but the rescue turned out to be a “textbook” success. By carefully blocking off secondary exits and using a humane trap, we were able to coax him into the cage without further stress.
A Hidden Struggle
Once safely secured, the reason for his behaviour became clear. This badger wasn’t just looking for a new home; he was a “battle-scarred” veteran of a recent fight with another badger. He bore a nasty wound on his rump and several scars across his face.
It appears he had intentionally separated himself from his main clan to find a quiet space to recover in peace. However, the severity of his infected rump wound meant he couldn’t heal on his own.
The Road to Recovery
The badger was immediately taken to the vets for a professional clean-up. After starting a course of antibiotics to fight the infection, his prognosis is looking bright. We expect him to have a smooth recovery before he is ready to return to the wild.
