Not every wildlife rescue concludes with a release, but every intervention serves a vital purpose: the end of unnecessary suffering. Recently, one of our rescuers attended a challenging call-out involving an injured badger on a coastal path near Clevedon.
A Difficult Recovery
The rescue was coordinated via a what3words reference, but the terrain proved difficult. With no vehicle access within 1.5 miles of the location, the rescuer had to transport essential gear—including a heavy crate and grasper—on foot. Navigating the muddy, slippery footpath took thirty minutes of strenuous trekking to reach the site.
Upon arrival, the rescuer found the badger (a male boar) being monitored by a local family. The family had gone above and beyond, waiting over an hour and providing towels and a box to keep the animal calm. Working in a confined space, the rescuer successfully secured the badger. Despite the animal’s weight and the difficult terrain, the crate was carried back to the road with the assistance of the family.
Clinical Outcome
The badger was transported to a veterinary practice in Portishead for urgent assessment. Despite a busy schedule, the veterinary team provided immediate, compassionate care.
The clinical examination revealed:
A badly broken and infected leg.
Significant dental damage.
Signs of advanced age and potential displacement from his sett.
It was determined that the badger was in significant pain with no viable path to recovery. To prevent further agony, the professional decision was made to humanely euthanise him.
A Dignified End
While the outcome is saddening, it underscores the importance of rescue work. Because of the quick thinking of the public and the persistence of the rescuer, this badger’s suffering was brought to a dignified end.
We extend our sincere thanks to the family for their compassion and the veterinary staff for their professional support.
